Spearfish, South Dakota-Spearfish Campground

MAY 08-13, 2016

Being in Spearfish was a bit of a surprise for us. Our plan was to head to North Dakota and stay near Theodore Roosevelt NP. Being early in the season, we had not made any reservations thinking that there wouldn't be any problem. Well there were two problems, the first was that season had NOT started! We would be there too early and the only two private campgrounds in the area were not yet open! The second problem was that the campground in the national park had no electricity and since Greg needs to work, that was not an option. Fortunately, we figured this out a couple of days before we took off. So instead of North Dakota, we stayed in South Dakota for one more week.

We found a city campground that was open although even they said the electricity wouldn't be turned on until some time on Monday (we move locations on Sunday). But it all turned out fine. We were able to use our generator so that Greg could work and a little after noon the electricity came on. Turns out that we really enjoyed the little town where we stayed.

Directly across from the campground was a fantastic playground and fish hatchery. There were several ponds filled with trout and the kids had a blast feeding them.

Behind our site was a creek and one day we looked out the window to find a team practicing their swift water rescues so we went to get a closer look.

One day it even snowed! In May!! It was the first real snow the kids had seen. So of course they bundled up and went out to throw snowballs and make snow angels. It didn't last more than a few hours (that's good and bad).

And we visited Spearfish Canyon, stopping at Bridal Veil Falls.

Then on to hike the trail to Roughlock Falls.

And after that, a shorter (but definitely uphill) hike to Mount Roosevelt to check out the view. Jordan hurt herself on the last step up which is probably why I don't have a picture of the view :(

That's all for South Dakota!  We're moving on!
